Oral history is central to my research methodology, especially given my investment in bottom-up perspectives on political change in Southeast Asia as a social historian. I have conducted interviews from Limbang to Singapore, from Ipoh to Christmas Island, with almost 40 people who were stateless or who have experienced other issues acquiring citizenship.

I am always looking to talk to more people who might be open to sharing their stories. Do you or does someone you know…

  1. Have a story to tell about the bureaucratic problems faced when acquiring citizenship in Malaysia (including Malaysian Borneo), Brunei, or Singapore?

  2. Have a story to tell about citizenship acquisition as a former member of the Communist Party of Malaya after being decommissioned in southern Thailand?

  3. Have a connection to Christmas and Cocos Islands, even if you have since left for Malaysia, Singapore, mainland Australia, or elsewhere?

If you or someone you know fit any of these descriptions, please feel free contact me in the form below. I would be grateful if you would be interested in sharing your recollections with me.
